Research Projects

Funding Criteria
Sask Pork is committed to ensuring that Saskatchewan pork production continues to be an economical and environmentally sustainable industry. Through research funds, Sask Pork provides funding to assist producers, researchers and companies to undertake research projects of benefit to the Pork Industry.

Sask Pork supports research through two programs:

  1. Sask Pork Research Fund: Ongoing research funding from the producer check-off.
  2. The Pork Industry Sustainability Program: Special, one-time fund of $1M provided by Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food.

Areas in which Sask Pork supports research include:

  • Environmental (manure management, odour control, air quality, environmental issues, etc.)
  • Animal production (engineering, housing, production, nutrition, etc.)
  • Worker health and safety
  • Animal welfare (health, etc.)
  • Base funding (annual grants to educational institutions and research facilities, sponsorship of research chairs, etc)
  • Public awareness (education, etc.)

Sask Pork Research Priorities
Sask Pork sets research priorities on an annual basis and funds projects in the areas of highest priority. Researchers are encouraged to contact Sask Pork to determine current priorities before submitting proposals.

Eligibility
Any person or organization with a concept that will benefit or be of practical value to the Saskatchewan pork industry is eligible to apply.

Required Format of Applications
Application forms are available directly from Sask Pork or electronic copies can be obtained on the Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food website (http://www.gov.sk.ca/agfood) under "Research":

When to Apply
Applications deadlines are April 1 and October 15.

Review and Approval Process
After each deadline date, project proposals will be reviewed by the Sask Pork Research Committee and considered for approval by the Sask Pork Board. Review criteria may include:

  • Merit of Objective
  • Literature Review
  • Ability of the Applicant
  • Environmental Impact
  • Economic Impact
  • Feasibility
  • Adequacy of Budgets

Successful applicants will be invited to enter into a contract with Sask Pork.

Funding Policy
Approved projects are eligible for funding up to 100% of eligible costs. Matching or additional funding from other sources is encouraged.

Eligible Costs

  • Professional or technical salaries or fees
  • Equipment rentals
  • Travel
  • Workshop or seminar costs and materials

Ineligible Costs

  • Overhead expenses
  • Purchase of land or materials
  • Equipment or other capital purchases
  • Expenses incurred on a project prior to Sask Pork approval

Sharing Results
Sask Pork is committed to providing the results of research to the industry. All applicants must specify how they will communicate the results of the project. Sask Pork reserves the right to publish or distribute all results following completion of the project.

Confidentiality
All proposals and project information are public information unless otherwise negotiated between the applicant and Sask Pork.
