CANADIAN PORK EXCELLENCE (cpe®)
Changes in hog production practices, including the 2014 release of the revised Code of Practice for the Care
and Handling of Pigs, and ongoing feedback from users, demonstrated it was necessary to refresh these programs. This work began in earnest in January 2015. The new CPE program will launch in December 2016 beginning with a pilot project January 2017. The CPE Program will be distributed to producers during the last
trimester of 2017 with full program implementation expected January 1, 2018.
As the process moves forward, the Canadian Pork Council will be providing monthly updates.
CANADIAN QUALITY ASSURANCE (CQA®)
Food safety is growing in global importance. The Canadian pork industry is fortunate to have had the foresight to develop a rigorous, auditable on-farm food safety program. Our CQA® program, implemented in 1998, is as highly
regarded around the world, as it is in Canada.
Although the program is voluntary, Saskatchewan producers continue to participate in the program in high numbers. 99% of all market pigs sold in Saskatchewan are raised under the Canadian Quality Assurance Program and come from CQA® registered farms. The program continues to evolve since it based on continuous improvement.
ANIMAL CARE ASSESSMENT (ACA)
Developed by producers, researchers and government officials, and led by the Canadian Pork Council, the ACA is an auditable, educational assessment tool that provides CQA® validated producers with the ability to evaluate and improve, if necessary, animal care in their production units. Focusing on assessing the care of animals, appropriate housing and equipment, in-barn environment and stockmanship, ACA will assist producers in developing a welfare assessment for your farm.
