Sun Ridge Colony shines as new barn rises

It’s another positive sign for the Saskatchewan hog industry.

Sun Ridge Colony hosted an open house in mid-August, for its brand new Farrow-to-Finish barn for industry members.

The 192,000 sq. ft. (4.4 acre) facility will host more than 1,100 sows and targets shipping over 750 pigs per week when fully operational.

Construction on the barn began in the Spring of 2025. Notably, the barn features an innovative Airworks heat exchange system to reduce energy use. This system receives heat from building exhaust, returning tempered fresh air to rooms, which will be beneficial to the sustainability of the entire barn.

“Having another state-of-the-art barn go up in our province is proof that our industry is strong and hog production provides substantial benefits to producers and the provincial economy,” said Sask Pork General Manager Mark Ferguson.

“Everyone who took part in this project should be proud of this amazing facility, and that Saskatchewan is a leading hog producing province in the country,” he added.

Over 30 industry partners and companies helped in bringing this barn online and its equipment and services will help keep it running operational for decades.

“This is accomplishment goes to show the hard work and investment our producers do to keep the industry strong. We are happy to support Sun Ridge Colony as they implement the latest innovation of technology and sustainability into this new barn, and it will be an important piece to the Saskatchewan pork industry in the decades ahead,” Sask Pork Board Chair Darrin Duell said.

As the finishing touches on the barn are completed, gilts are expected to be in barn by the end of September.
